Integrating Into a New Environment 

While the onboarding process may seem like a simple one, the devil is in the details. As much as a new hire is anxious to dig in and be a productive, contributing member of any organization, a poor onboarding process can hinder the impact of a candidate even if they are the perfect fit.

New hires like to know of their orientation information in advance and receive all paperwork related to benefits, timekeeping and the like, early on. Prolonging this step can lead to an individual feeling a lack of control within their new environment from the very start.

Ways to Welcome Your New Team Member

The following bullets represent ways to help welcome your new hire onto the team.

  • Take them out for a welcome lunch.
  • Show them around the office.
  • Help them understand more about the team and program.
  • Listen to their interests and concerns.
  • Discuss expectations and how you will check in with them regularly.
  • Introduce them to other members of the team.
  • Have some tasks planned that will help them to slowly acquire knowledge and ease into the role.
  • Create a reference packet of key information.
  • Pair them with a more experienced team member.
  • Regularly schedule team knowledge transfer sessions to enable everyone to sharpen their learning skills without having any individual feel as though it is focused on them.

Demonstrating a caring, interested attitude towards your new team members will go a long way in helping them become well acclimated and productive, while boosting the energy and productivity of your overall team.
